How to see nesting Ospreys

With an Osprey nest at Lyndon, there should again be great opportunities to see birds 5N and 08 when they arrive after the long journey from West Africa. More details of how to visit Lyndon are here.

Passage migrants

With hundreds of Ospreys heading up to Scotland, many will pass through Rutland Water and perhaps stop to re-fuel before making the the last stage of their migration. Just about anywhere around the reservoir is a possible fishing location and the map of the reservoir here marks some of the most likely places to watch from.

Rutland Water Nature Reserve

There is a separate website www.rutlandwater.org.uk that describes the nature reserve that is the home of the Rutland Osprey Project. There you will find maps and visiting arrangements, together with recent wildlife sightings details and events during the summer.

The reserve is always a great place to visit - particularly on a fine spring day!

Osprey and Wildlife Cruises

Since 2005 many visitors have joined us for a cruise on Rutland Water in the hope of seeing Ospreys catching fish. Most have certainly seen Ospreys. Sometimes the birds are flying over the boat carrying a still-live trout, sometimes they are circling above the water looking for their prey, and sometimes we see the magic moment when the bird splashes into the water and rises again into the air clasping its prize.

Details of the cruises are here. Places are filling already so it is best to book early - don't miss the boat!
