Fish not for sharing

Our chicks are now 6 weeks old! Can you believe it? It doesn’t seem long at all since they were hatching – it is always surprising to see just how quickly they grow. Here they are week by week, their growth rate is phenomenal!

The chicks are becoming more independent all the time – earlier today 2AN took a fish straight from 33 after he brought it to the nest! She quickly began to tuck in, shielding the fish with her wings from her brother – it was brilliant to watch. 2AM quickly realised he wasn’t getting any fish any time soon and settled back down on the nest – his time would come!

After a while 2AN had had her fill, and 2AM tried to have a go at feeding himself – with little success! Thankfully, Maya soon landed on the nest and gave 2AM a proper feed, so he didn’t go hungry.

Maya also fed 2AN a bit more food, and then left her to get on with eating the tail.

As well as some independent fish eating, we’ve also seen some more great wing beating, with the chicks hopping and trying to get off the nest. Watching them clumsily try to get airborne is quite comical at the moment, so it’s incredible to think that these amazing birds will soon be using those wings on their 3,000 mile journey to West Africa!

We’ve also had some visitors to the nest – other ospreys, and gulls too! Our pair, as always, did a great job of chasing them off. This footage is all from between 7.20am – 7.25am this morning.
