About Byron Wood Primary School
Byron Wood Primary School is a large inner-city Local Authority school catering to an extremely diverse community. Over 90% of our pupils have English as a second or additional language. The community has very high levels of deprivation.
I started working for the school in September 2015 and organised for a group of pupils to take part in the RSPB big schools bird watch. This event uncovered a great deal of interest among many of the pupils for natural history. As a result a colleague and I now run a weekly after-school wildlife club with year 5 and 6's.
What we would like to achieve
> To allow children's enthusiasm for natural history to grow through gaining knowledge of their natural heritage.
> To help them grow in their understanding of what a healthy ecosystem comprises and the role of top predators, including raptors, in such an ecosystem.
> To highlight the impact that humans are having on wildlife in Britain, both currently and historically.
> To show the role that conservation has in combating such harm done.
