Sack the juggler

What a beautiful day it has been today! Our Ospreys have been relaxing in the pleasant weather, and everything is going wonderfully smoothly, just as we want it to! Now that the birds are back and settled at the nest site, they are behaving just as we would expect, with lots of nest building, mating and fish deliveries by 33(11).

Today, the fish delivery did not quite go to plan…

Recently, 33 has been catching some monster fish, that have still been alive when he brings them to the T-perch. We have thought more than once that he is in danger of losing his catch. Well, today it happened! 33 brought in a huge fish at about 2pm, and took it to the perch as usual. After holding onto it as it thrashed about in a vain attempt to escape, he proceeded to eat it.

About 50 minutes later, it looked as though 33 was about to leave the perch to fly to the nest, where Maya was waiting patiently for her share of the fish. It was then that it all went wrong. Somehow he lost his grip on the slippery fish as he moved, and then suddenly it dropped like a stone into the water. 33 looked down at it as though he couldn’t quite work out how that had happened.

Surprisingly, he had managed to hold onto the fish when it was alive and kicking, but then dropped it when it was half eaten and quite dead! When he arrived at the nest empty-handed a few minutes later, Maya was not amused.
