Three’s a Crowd

Over the past week intruding Ospreys have become a regular sight in Manton Bay and now that 5R and his mate have settled in to breeding mode, the intruders tend to be chased off before they get too close to the nest. Most of the time…

The third Osprey in the bay was the very same female that landed on the nest last Saturday, 30(05). She is one of the other female birds who has bred in the area since 2009 and she is obviously trying to keep herself amused as she waits for her mate to return.

After the excitement subsided 5R got down to business and started nest-building. Over the winter the nest lining in Osprey nests becomes compacted, meaning one of the first jobs the birds have when they return, is to scrape out the nest cup. Last year the nest was so compacted that 5R had real difficulty scraping out a shallow cup.
