Since he returned to Manton Bay yesterday, 5R has spent time nest-scraping, collecting sticks and chasing off the Egyptian Geese and Mallards who clearly have their eyes on the nest. Here’s a series of John Wright’s best photos of his first 24 hours back in the bay.
Over the winter the nest lining in Osprey nests becomes compacted, meaning one of the first jobs the birds have when they return is to scrape out the nest cup. This year the nest is so compacted that 5R has had real difficulty scraping out a shallow cup. As these photos show, he has ended up on his back with legs flailing on more than one occasion!
